Golf Cart Information and Regulations

ALL GOLF CART APPLICATIONS RECEIVED OR CALLED FOR PAYMENT AFTER 4:30PM WILL BE PROCESSED THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY.
HOW TO GET YOUR GOLF CART LICENSE PLATE:

BRING (best, fastest, easiest option if possible) your completed application, valid Texas Liability Insurance *for the golf cart* and a copy of your drivers license to City Hall (710 W Avenue A, Port Aransas, TX 78373) during normal business hours (M-F, 8am to noon and 1pm to 4:30pm).
You can walk out with your valid license plate.

YOU MUST CALL OR REMIT PAYMENT BEFORE 4:30 PM M-F.

During the Peak Season (May - September) all requests to pick-up Golf Cart Plates at City Hall will be taken to the Police Department at 5:00 p.m. each Friday for after hours and weekend pick-up.

MAIL: your completed application copy of your valid Texas Liability Insurance *for the golf cart* and a copy of your drivers license to City Hall, 710 W Avenue A, Port Aransas, TX 78373.
  • We will mail your plate to you the day we receive all the complete/valid information or we can leave it to be picked up, after-hours, at the Police Department. Please indicate which option works best for you.

Then you will need to call and pay with a credit card over the phone. Between the hours of 8:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:30 PM.

  • We can mail the plate to you that day or leave it to be picked up, after-hours, at the Police Department.
VANITY GOLF CART PLATES RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Vanity plates will be issued on a first come first serve basis. We will reserve your plate from year to year for a period of two months (January, February) and on March 1st, the plate name will become available to the general public. The City Manager (or his designee) will keep the list and be in charge of plate name approvals and reserves the right to refuse plate names for any reason.

Plate names are limited to seven spaces and can only include letters, numbers or a combination of both.

Vanity plates take approximately weeks 6 to 8 weeks to process, you will be issued a temporary paper plate in the interim period.

Vanity Plates will be an additional cost of $20.00 to total $70.00 per year for year-round resident and $120.00 per year for non-resident.

The application process is the same except you will receive a temporary plate until your permanent plate arrives.

VANITY PLATES ARE ONLY AVAILABLE TO ORDER FROM JANUARY 1 UNTIL JUNE 30. VANITY PLATES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE TO ORDER AFTER JUNE 30.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Ordinance 23-300-: Golf cart means a motor vehicle with not less than three (3) wheels designed by the manufacturer primarily for transporting persons on a golf course without regard to the mode of propulsion or any modifications made to the body, chassis, or any portion of the golf cart by any person. Golf carts specifically exclude go-carts, neighborhood electric vehicles, off road vehicles, utility vehicles, and all-terrain vehicles, as defined by the Texas Transportation Code.

Golf cart license shall mean a privilege granted upon compliance with terms of this chapter to legally operate a golf cart on a public street or highway within the corporate boundaries of the City of Port Aransas during the year when granted.

Golf cart license certificate shall mean a certificate for attachment to a golf cart carrying a serial number corresponding to the number of the golf cart license for such golf cart and showing the calendar year the license shall expire.

Golf cart license fee shall mean a charge imposed as specified in this chapter for the granting of golf cart license and the issuance of a golf cart license certificate.

Golf cart rental business shall mean any business or individual that provides golf carts or NEV's to the general public or any business or individual transaction that includes a golf cart or NEV for use including but not limited to rental of a hotel/motel room, or dwelling unit who's rental includes use of a golf cart or NEV.

Low-speed vehicles (LSVs) also known as neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs).

Neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) shall include all vehicles defined by Section 551.301 of the Texas Transportation Code.

***Golf Carts with engine modifications or other major modifications will not be issued Golf Cart plates.***
Golf Carts must be slow moving vehicle.

All Golf Cart Plates and Beach Passes are good for the Calendar year beginning January 1 and ending December 31. You must apply for a new Golf Cart Plate every January 1 no matter what time of year previous plate was purchased.
